Full Battle Rattle Invited to Sundance Lab

Tony Gerber and I have been invited to the Sundance Institute Documentary Lab in August to workshop "Full Battle Rattle," our documentary about life inside the US Army's Iraq simulation. We'll be working with the Lab's guest film composers and screening our cut for advisors and staff. It should be a wonderful opportunity to share the film, in its early rough-cut stage, with an audience and get some feedback.

Hogue Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

James Hogue was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for theft on Thursday, May 17 in Telluride. "A waste of talent and brainpower," said his attorney Harvey Palefsky. I couldn't agree more. Full Battle Rattle

The Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program announced today that they have awarded a work-in-progress grant to my new documentary, Full Battle Rattle. The film, which I'm directing with Tony Gerber, is about life inside the US Army’s Iraq simulation in California's Mojave Desert from the perspective of the Iraqi-American civilians who work there as “role players” and the US soldiers who train there. Con Man Screens in Philly, Sat. June 3rd

Con Man is screening in Philadelphia on Saturday, June 3rd, as part of the First Person Arts Festival .

The Program is called "Secrets & Lies." Here's the official rundown of the event:

Explore the human impulse to reinvent oneself with authors Mary Gordon (The Shadow Man), Michael Finkel (True Story: Murder, Memoir, and Mea Culpa), John Richardson (My Father the Spy), and documentary filmmaker Jesse Moss (Con Man). Probe the psyches of people who lead a double life and consider the consequences for those who become entangled. Followed by a screening of Con Man, Moss’ astonishing documentary of a swindler who tricks his way into Princeton University.

Speedo - The Term Paper

I came across this college term paper by Meghan Quinn comparing Speedo and American Movie and "the reality of the American Dream." While I don't agree with all her conclusions, it's an interesting academic analysis. Favorite line: "The stories in the films are deliberately constructed to mimic fiction."

James Hogue Arrested

James Hogue was arrested on Saturday, February 4, in Tucscon, Arizona on felony theft charges. Mr. Hogue was arrested today in Tucson, AZ at my work.(Barnes&Noble). Earlier this week a detective posted photos of him in our breakroom,and i just happened to be the one who noticed his face while he was sitting in our cafe on his laptop.He had a scruffy face and a white cap on his head.I noticed him only because he seemed very "sketchy"-he was kinda watching the people around him instead of paying attention to his laptop.I learned of this website later after he was apprehended,and i was surprised to see his somewhat twisted celebrity.

Saving Sex for Later

A study analyzing the effectiveness of Saving Sex for Later, appears in the new issue of Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health. According to the authors, my collaborators at EDC, "Saving Sex for Later is a promising intervention for promoting youths' sexual abstinence. The intervention may also be effective in enhancing positive parenting practices among parents who are typically difficult to reach because of economic hardship, full schedules and complicated lives." Court TV Broadcast Tonight - Behind the Mask

Tonight at 10 pm EST Court TV will broadcast "Behind the Mask," a new one hour documentary that I produced about the Aryan Republican Army, a gang of notorious white supremacist bank robbers. The film is part of Court TV's Investigators series. The ARA robbed twenty banks across the mid-west in the mid 1990s in an attempt to finance the violent overthrow of the United States government. The leader of the gang, Peter Langan, was, in addition to being a bank robber, a pre-operative transsexual, an identity that he concealed from his fellow gang members. The gang produced a remarkable documentary about themselves, portions of which are excerpted in my film.

New Speedo Screenings Announced

Speedo: A Demolition Derby Love Story will be screening in cities around the country as part of the Indiewire Undiscovered Gems Film Festival this month. Read the Indiewire article or visit the Emerging Pictures website for details, including screening dates and venues. Speedo will screen at the IFC Center in New York City on Friday, November 11 at 2pm and 7:30pm. The star of the film, Ed "Speedo" Jager will be in attendance.
